CHAPTER THIRTY

Ernst walked back to his desk. He sat down and leaned on the desk with his elbows, then he put his head in his hands, and he thought about Shoshana. She was so good with the children. And she was so kind to him. He wished he could do something for her. In fact, he wished he could do something for all of them. When he thought of the children that Mengele had imprisoned in his rooms awaiting his next experiment, Ernst felt sick to his stomach. He saw their young, innocent faces, wizened by what they had been forced to endure. No child should go through what these children go through. No adult should either. I sometimes feel as if I am in hell. If I leave, I may lose my wife, but more importantly, these innocent children will lose the only person who might try to intervene with Mengele on their behalf. Even so, eventually I will be forced to go. I can only take so much.

Outside his office, he heard two nurses; they were talking and laughing together. He wondered how they could carry on as if this place were a normal hospital. A shiver ran down his spine. I wish I could kill Mengele. If only I had the nerve. But I am a coward; I’ve never killed anything in my life. He hates me because he thinks I am weak. Perhaps he’s right. But if I were stronger, I would kill him, not innocent people. So, he should be glad that I don’t have it in me to be violent because if I did, he would be dead already.

It was lunchtime, but Ernst had no appetite. He couldn’t stop thinking about the boy that Mengele had given typhus. In his mind’s eye, he could see the boy and his twin brother. In his heart, he could feel their pain, and he wished that he could run away from his thoughts. Mengele had gone to see the child earlier that day, to administer his experimental cure. But it came as no surprise to Ernst that the cure had no effect on the disease. When I overheard him and Otto discussing the fact that Mengele’s attempt at a cure failed, Mengele just laughed. The man is less than human. And now that young boy is dying. And for what reason? A perfectly healthy boy is now dying. This whole hospital is a travesty. In fact, this entire camp should not exist. It is here for the sole purpose of killing innocent people. How did I ever get involved in this?

The air itself seemed too close, like a living thing pressing against his face. It had a sharp, musty scent. Outside his office window, Ernst watched the ashes falling like snowflakes. A transport came in yesterday. I know Otto and Mengele did the selections. And now, the ashes of the burned bodies cover the ground. It’s like a nightmare, except it’s real.

Mengele walked by Ernst’s office and knocked on the door.
